Private Lessons

Unless your child is already studying music or over the age of ten, plan to begin with three levels of the Experience Music class. By level three of that class, you will have routines in place that will make home practice a success.

Once you begin private lessons, you will need your own instrument and will begin building your listening library. All families in private lessons also have daily homework for both parents and child. Since this does not work with the lifestyle of all families, we offer Level III of the Experience Music class on an ongoing basis for those who simply want to gain exposure and a few basic skills.

Please see our contract for information about tuition, and use the contact form to set up an observation time or interview.

Piano Lessons

The piano is a beautiful instrument with many possibilities for solo or community music-making. You will need one at home that is of a sufficient quality to allow your child to learn the subtleties of tone production and technique. We begin our passionate pursuit of golden tone from the first lesson, so expect to start on a good-quality acoustic instrument rather than a keyboard or spinet. Your teacher will connect you with resources for purchasing a piano, adjustable bench, and footstool.

Violin & Viola Lessons

Many parents feel a natural concern over listening to the sound of a beginner violinist. We give very specific exercises to produce good tone as soon as possible, and guide you to the best sources we can find for affordable, quality instruments so that your child's playing will be enjoyable from the first week.

Since it is as important for you to play and practice as it is for your child, you will most likely need to rent or purchase two instruments, one in your size and one in theirs. Violinists and violists also need a shoulder rest, which may require adjustment and experimentation along the way, and you will occasionally need new strings. Expect to replace your child's instrument as they grow, and gradually work your way into a professional quality instrument.
